On 'The treatise says…' and so forth: Someone may ask, 'It would suffice to mention either seeing or knowing; why does the sūtra state both in full?' Therefore it says: 'If it did not state…' and so forth. For ordinary beings also have knowing and seeing: their seeing is through the physical eye, and their knowing is combined with inferential cognition; hence they have things they do not know and do not see. The Buddha's knowing and seeing now are not the same as this: where there is seeing, there is immediately knowing, not like inferential knowing; where there is knowing, there is immediately seeing, not the same as seeing with the physical eye. That is, there is no phenomenon he does not know and no phenomenon he does not see. The sūtra's statement of 'all' lies precisely in this. Therefore Maitreya's verse says: 'The Buddha does not know through seeing a result; / by the power of his aspirational wisdom, he sees it directly.'
