"Severing afflictions" means that the afflictions of cultivation in the desire realm are four: greed, anger, ignorance, and arrogance. These are innate subtle afflictions that arise spontaneously and obstruct the path of cultivation. Because they are difficult to sever, they are divided into nine grades, namely from the highest of the high down to the lowest of the low. These nine grades of afflictions are severed by persons of the second and third fruits: severing up to five grades is called approaching the second fruit, and completely severing six grades is called the second fruit. Therefore the Abhidharmakośa states: "Severing up to five is approaching the second; / Severing six is the fruit of once-returning."
