"Severing afflictions, etc." means that among the previous nine grades of afflictions, there remain the lower three grades; severing up to eight grades is called approaching the third fruit, and completely severing all nine grades is called the third fruit. Therefore the Abhidharmakośa states: "Severing seven or eight grades of afflictions / Is named approaching the third fruit; / When nine grades are completely severed, / One attains the fruit of non-returning."
