第一等者。謂十大弟子各有一能，皆稱第一。即迦葉頭陀，阿難多聞，舍利弗智慧，目連神通，羅睺羅密行，阿那律天眼，富樓那說法，迦旃延論義，優波離持律，須菩提解空。今言無諍者，只由解空得無諍故。亦如夫子十哲，各有能事，謂：德行，顏淵、閔子騫、冉伯牛、仲弓，言語，宰我、子貢，政事，冉有、季路，文學，子游、子夏。

"Foremost" and so forth: this means that the ten great disciples each possessed a distinct capability and were all proclaimed foremost: that is, Kāśyapa in dhūta [practices], Ānanda in hearing much, Śāriputra in wisdom, Maudgalyāyana in supernatural powers, Rāhula in esoteric conduct, Aniruddha in the divine eye, Pūrṇa in preaching the Dharma, Kātyāyana in debate, Upāli in upholding the vinaya, and Subhūti in understanding śūnyatā. Now, stating "non-contention" is solely because he attained non-contention through understanding śūnyatā. It is just like the Master's [Confucius's] ten philosophers, each having their area of competence: namely, in virtuous conduct, Yan Yuan, Min Ziqian, Ran Boniu, and Zhonggong; in speech, Zai Wo and Zigong; in government affairs, Ran You and Jilu; in literature, Ziyou and Zixia.
