爾炎者，梵語，此云智母，即根本智能生後得，故名智母。以根本智雖內證真理而無能證之心，今後得智雖外度生而無能度之念，故云如爾炎也。如是用意名不顛倒心，反之即顛倒耳。

"Jñeya": a Sanskrit word, translated here as 'mother of gnosis', which is fundamental gnosis able to give rise to subsequent gnosis, hence called 'mother of gnosis'. Because although fundamental gnosis internally realizes the true principle, it has no mind that is the realizing subject; and now although subsequent gnosis externally liberates sentient beings, it has no thought of being the liberating subject; hence it says 'like jñeya'. Directing the mind like this is called the non-distorted mind; the opposite is distorted.
