[Regarding] the suffering of adversity: The intention of the sūtra is that when a bodhisattva engages in practice, it is fundamentally for the sake of benefiting sentient beings; therefore they immediately practice giving free from signs. If they can be free from signs, then when sentient beings oppose them, weariness will not arise. How much more so when the two signs of self and dharmas are declared by the Tathāgata to be non-signs? Because both are fundamentally non-existent, one must be free from them; if they were fundamentally existent, what need would there be to be free from them? The purpose of exhorting detachment from them becomes fully evident here.
