[Regarding] 'the skandhas are empty...' and so forth: Because the five skandhas that are able to form [them] do not exist, it is said that 'dharmas lack a self.' However, these two signs of person and dharmas are fundamentally empty and non-existent; sentient beings, unaware of this, deludedly cling to them as existent. What is now spoken is intended to make them understand and be free from them. Furthermore, in the sūtra text concerning self and dharmas, the text and the intention are inverted: the text puts dharmas first and persons second, whereas the intention puts persons first and dharmas second. In the Wei translation of the sūtra the phrasing is clear, and therefore the commentary now explains it according to the intention.
