一佛乘者。經中初標大乘名，恐濫於權教，故復揀云最上乘者。今疏中出最上乘體，故云一佛乘也。體當本覺故名為佛，非二非三故名一乘。故魏經云：「為住第一大乘眾生說」，即當善吉所為機發無上菩提心者。

"The one Buddha vehicle": the sūtra first set forth the term "Great Vehicle" (Mahāyāna), but fearing it might be confused with the provisional teachings, it further distinguishes by speaking of the "supreme vehicle". Here, the commentary brings forth the essence of the supreme vehicle, and thus speaks of the "one Buddha vehicle". Its essence corresponds to original enlightenment, hence it is called "Buddha"; it is neither two nor three, hence it is called the "one vehicle". Therefore, the Wei translation states: "Spoken for sentient beings abiding in the foremost Great Vehicle", which corresponds to the recipients whom Subhūti addressed, those who have generated the aspiration for unexcelled bodhi.
