轉罪。經意云：如過去造極惡，合來世墮三塗者，苟遇此經受持讀誦，功力既著能消極惡，遂以現遭輕賤之事，更不墮於惡道，即是轉重業令輕受也。持經無我等相，即煩惱障盡。極惡消滅，即業障盡。不墮，即報障盡。三障既滅三德必圓，故云當得菩提也。

"Transforming offenses": the meaning of the sūtra is that, if one committed extreme evil in the past such that one was destined to fall into the three evil paths in a future life, should one encounter this sūtra, uphold, read, and recite it, its efficacy, being substantial, can eliminate that extreme evil; thus, through being held in contempt in this present life, one will no longer fall into the evil paths. This is transforming heavy karma into a light retribution. Upholding the sūtra without marks of a self and so forth exhausts the affliction obstacle. The elimination of extreme evil exhausts the karma obstacle. Not falling [into evil paths] exhausts the retribution obstacle. Since the three obstacles are destroyed, the three virtues must be perfected; therefore it says that one 'will attain bodhi'.
