5.222

然燈前者。以釋迦因地修行經三無數劫，第一劫滿遇寶髻如來，第二劫滿遇然燈如來，第三劫滿遇勝觀如來。今云然燈前者，即第二劫中也。

"Before Dīpaṃkara": because Śākyamuni practiced on the causal ground through three incalculable kalpas. At the completion of the first kalpa he met Ratnacūḍa Tathāgata; at the completion of the second kalpa he met Dīpaṃkara Tathāgata; at the completion of the third kalpa he met Vipaśyin Tathāgata. Now saying 'before Dīpaṃkara' refers to the second kalpa.
