"Subduing Enmity..." below: recounting the original event. According to what is explained in the *Abhiniṣkramaṇa Sūtra*: long ago there was a great city named Padmapura. In the city there was a king named Subduer of Enmity. There was a brahmin named Sūryapati. He was revered by the king, who divided half the kingdom and enfeoffed him as king, creating a separate royal city named Śāndipati. Sūryapati's wife was named Candrottarā. The Bodhisattva Dīpaṃkara descended into the spirit through the right rib, left home, and achieved the Way. At that time King Subduer of Enmity, wishing to welcome and invite him, issued an edict across twelve yojanas inside and outside the city forbidding all flowers from being privately sold; the king bought them all himself to make offerings to the Tathāgata. On the south face of the Snow Mountains in that country there was a brahmacārin named Ratna, who had five hundred disciples. Among them was a disciple named Megha, or named Sumati, who was the leader among that assembly; having fully studied all the rishi teachings, he took leave of his teacher to return home. The teacher said: "Now that you are about to return, you must offer a pure parasol, leather sandals, a gold staff, and even five hundred gold coins to repay the debt of gratitude." Megha said: "I have none of these things at present; just let me go, and as soon as I obtain them I will send them." The teacher then let him go. Megha, by attending an unhindered gathering, obtained five hundred gold coins, and thereupon wished to send them back to his teacher's place. Because he arrived inside the city of Padmapura and saw how adorned and magnificent the city was, he questioned the people and came to know that Dīpaṃkara Tathāgata was about to arrive. Thereupon, taking three hundred gold coins, he bought five stems of utpala flowers from a servant-girl; together with two stems of flowers entrusted to him by that girl, they jointly made the offering. At that time, when the Buddha entered the city, he scattered these flowers over the Buddha's crown. Through the power of his vow, they formed a flower canopy that followed the Buddha as he moved and stayed. Through the Buddha's supernatural power, a patch of mud was manifested; seeing it, Sumati spread his hair to cover it, and further had this thought: "I vow that the Tathāgata will walk over my body; if I do not receive prediction, I will never rise." The Tathāgata immediately arrived, trod upon him, and passed by, stopping the disciples so that none trod on him; he then conferred upon him the prediction, speaking these words: "In a future age, this māṇava will attain Buddhahood, named Śākyamuni, fully possessing the ten titles, no different from me." Now, Subhūti's intent is: since buying flowers to offer to the Buddha and spreading hair to cover the mud is precisely being a bodhisattva, if this is not a bodhisattva, then who is a bodhisattva?
