Wisdom merges with principle, and mind unites with spirit; the phenomenon attained is eradicated, and the subjective mind capable of attaining does not exist—hence it says "entirely non-existent," etc. "Due to non-existence..." points precisely to attaining through non-attainment above. As for bodhi as a phenomenon, it is quiescent extinction and unproduced, neither empty nor existent, and free from all marks. If one is free from subject and object, one accords with bodhi and receives the Buddha's prediction; if one retains subject and object, and mind and sphere are not eradicated, then one is extremely contrary to bodhi—how could one receive prediction? Therefore the *Vimalakīrti* states: "Quiescent extinction is bodhi, because it extinguishes all marks."
