"Not abiding in characteristics": ordinary people, being deluded about true emptiness, abide in characteristics; one should know that awakening to true emptiness means not abiding in characteristics. "Abiding" means the sense of grasping and defiled attachment. Moreover, ordinary people are confused and do not comprehend impermanence, hence they cling to the worldly realm and do not strive to cultivate and advance; one should know that penetrating how all things possess an impermanent nature, transmuting and decaying thought after thought without lasting long, leads them to fear birth and death and delight in nirvāṇa, like saving one's head from burning or competing for every inch of time. Therefore the Buddha, in the assembly of the Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra, singled out this contemplation for praise as foremost. In these two phrases, each contains understanding and practice; the paired explanation can be understood.
