7.220

佛說是經已者。本為空生致問，故佛答降住修行。答問既終便合經畢，仍以躡跡起疑連環二十七段，洎乎此文疑念氷釋。既善吉無問，故能仁杜宣。一卷經內，雖兼有師資，以其就勝故但云佛說。長老等義如前所解。

"When the Buddha had finished speaking this sūtra": Originally, because Subhūti posed a question, the Buddha answered regarding subduing and abiding in practice. When the question and answer concluded, the sūtra should have ended, yet because questions were raised following in the wake of each explanation, there was an interlocking chain of twenty-seven sections, until with this passage all doubts and thoughts melted like ice. Since Subhūti had no further questions, Śākyamuni ceased his exposition. Although within the single fascicle of the sūtra both teacher and disciple are included, based on preeminence it simply says "the Buddha spoke." The meaning of "elder" and so forth is as explained previously.
