However, the wisdom that reaches the other shore has roughly two senses, namely, sudden and gradual. As for the sudden: when this wisdom manifests, in a single kṣaṇa it illuminates all dharmas as empty, which is itself reaching the other shore; therefore it is named the wisdom that reaches the other shore; because it does not pass through much time, it is called sudden. As for the gradual: although it suddenly illuminates the emptiness of dharmas, yet habit has become second nature, and conceptual clinging operates spontaneously; therefore, one spurs on that wisdom of sudden awakening to perceive deluded sentiments, diminishing them and diminishing them further until reaching the asaṃskṛta; this is reaching the other shore definitively, and is also named the wisdom that reaches the other shore; because it passes through much time, it is called gradual. Although the gradual and the sudden differ in being slow or fast, both alike obtain the name of the wisdom that reaches the other shore. For this reason, the title fully ought to say: "Vajracchedikā Prajñāpāramitā". Here it is omitted and not stated.
