"Three thousand" refers to the trichiliocosm, as explained below. "Auspicious" refers to auspicious omens. "Radiant" means bright. When the Buddha expounded this sūtra, he emitted a great radiance that illuminated the three-thousandfold world with utter brilliance, and he furthermore manifested various wondrous occurrences. Because there were these auspicious omens, it says, "the three thousand [worlds] shone with auspicious radiance." Thus the first [fascicle] of the Mahāprajñāpāramitā Sūtra says: "At that time the World-Honoured One sat upon the lion seat, spreading out his niṣīdana himself and crossing his legs in the full lotus posture. Entering the king of samādhis of equanimous absorption, he arose with serene composure, and from each part of his body emitted sixty hundred-thousand koṭi-nayutas of light, each illuminating the trichiliocosm," and so on, down to saying: "causing this world to quake in six ways, the blind to gain sight, the deaf to gain hearing," etc. It also says: "Through the Buddha's spiritual power, those devas and humans each saw the Buddha sitting directly before them, and all believed that the Tathāgata was expounding the Dharma solely for them."
