In Sanskrit it is fully called saṅghārāma, translated here as "community park." Thus saṅgha is the community of residents, and ārāma is the park that is resided in; this merely condenses the residents into the residence. 'Temple' (si) means an office or official residence. Because when the Buddha-Dharma first arrived, it was lodged in the Court of State Ceremonial (Honglusi), when monasteries were established later, they took this as their name.
