On "Kauṇḍinya and the others": the remaining ones are Aśvajit, Mahānāman, Bhadrika, Bāṣpa, and Pūrṇamaitrāyaṇīputra. According to the *Abhiniṣkramaṇa Sūtra*: "When the Buddha first attained the Way, King Brahmā and others requested him to turn the wheel of the Dharma. The World-Honoured One accepted the request and contemplated thus: 'Among the worlds, who should be saved first? There are five ṛṣis who formerly brought me great benefit; they are capable of receiving my first turning of the wheel of the Dharma.' He further thought: 'Where are those five ṛṣis now?' With his pure divine eye, he saw those five ṛṣis in the Deer Park. Thereupon the World-Honoured One went to that park and expounded the Dharma extensively for them. The bodies and minds of the non-Buddhists were completely subdued and extinguished; the garments they wore immediately became the three robes; they held bowls in their hands, their beards and hair fell out of themselves, and after seven days, their deportment was complete, like bhikṣus of a hundred summer retreats. Then he turned the wheel of the Dharma of the Four Noble Truths for them, and they attained the fruit of arhatship."
