Now, as for "transforming and extinguishing": among the three, it is only unwholesome karma that is transformed, because it goes against principle; the time [of retribution] extends to all three. Regarding the experiencing of retribution for this unwholesome karma, according to the teachings of the Hīnayāna tradition, there are determinate and indeterminate [karmas]. For example, the four pārājikas in the first section are called determinate karma, while saṃghāvaśeṣa and below are called indeterminate karma. Correlating this with time yields four propositions: time is determinate but retribution is indeterminate; retribution is determinate but time is indeterminate; both are determinate; both are indeterminate. According to what this sūtra teaches, however, it is not so: that which has not entered our Dharma is called determinate karma; if it has entered our Dharma, it is called indeterminate karma. What is meant by "indeterminate" is that it may be light or heavy, and may be experienced or not experienced.
