As for the commentary's "not having heard" and so forth: Second, the explanation. This means that prior to the twelve years, people of the Hīnayāna took only the golden body with the thirty-two marks to be the true Buddha, not knowing that there is yet another true Buddha; hence it says, "they speak only of the physical marks." As for "not knowing" and so forth: Because they had not yet penetrated the śūnyatā of phenomena (dharma-śūnyatā), they did not know that these marks are merely reflected images appearing within the true body. Therefore the *Vijñaptimātratā* says: "The Great Perfect Mirror Wisdom can manifest and produce reflections of bodies, lands, and wisdom." Since it says they are reflections, one knows they are not real. Therefore Maitreya's verse says: "The responsive and transformative [bodies] are not the true Buddha, / nor are they the speaker of the Dharma."
