From "Tallying with the Dharma..." down: explains the reason. The intention is to cause one to forget preconceptions and adorn the land of dharmatā, and not to cause thoughts to arise, thereby adorning the land of dharmalakṣaṇa. Therefore the sūtra says: "One should not produce a mind abiding in form... one should produce a mind without any abiding." The gāthā explains: "Wisdom practices the penetration of consciousness-only; / Thus one grasps the pure land. / It is not of shape, the foremost substance; / It is not an adornment—such is the intention of adornment."
