"Practice based on faith..." and below divides the stages. Among the eighteen abodes, the first sixteen abodes are the stage of practice based on faith (śraddhācarita-bhūmi). This corresponds to the three [levels of] worthies. Because they give rise to practice based on faith, it is called "practice based on faith"; it is also called "faith-understanding" (adhimukti), because they give rise to understanding based on faith. The seventeenth abode is the stage of the pure mind (śuddhādhyāśaya-bhūmi). This corresponds to the first bhūmi, because one is free from the cognitive obstacles of conceptual discrimination and directly realizes tathatā. The eighteenth abode, from the second bhūmi onward up to the Buddha stage, is generally called the Tathāgata stage. Furthermore, because various authors clarify the stages either extensively or concisely—the extensive being fifty-two stages, the concise utterly obliterating them to nothing—now we balance the extensive and concise, removing the extremes, and expound the three grounds and five stages.
