Regarding "if free from, etc.": this explains the meaning of the inquiry. Because the Wei translation states 'not abiding in marks or thoughts,' a doubt subsequently arose: 'If the thought of giving is retained, there is a cause of giving; only with a cause of giving can there be a fruit of giving. Since there is no thought of giving, there is no cause of giving. When the cause is not even established, how can the fruit stand? Just as in lending money one must record it, for if forgotten, who will repay it?' This doubt equates giving with doing so with an indeterminate mind. The same applies to the dharma.
