"Seeking different matters": explains 'repaying kindness' and 'karmic reward' above. These are not the correct practices performed by a bodhisattva, hence they are called 'different matters'. Repaying kindness requites past kindness; karmic reward looks forward to future retribution; not giving due to one's own body corresponds to the present. 'Guarding' also means preventing. The intention is to cause one to guard against and completely avoid clinging to the matters of these three times; this is precisely giving without abiding in form and so forth.
