The intention in resolving the doubt: If, as you say, upholding this sūtra and a bodhisattva's engagement in ascetic practice were the same as relinquishing the body and both resulted in a fruition of suffering, this would not be correct. Because previously relinquishing the body did not comprehend signlessness, it resulted in a fruition of suffering; but by upholding and expounding this teaching, a bodhisattva's ascetic practice comprehends the absence of self and person, knows that forbearance is non-forbearance and that the other shore is not a shore, directly reaching the fundamental source—how could it result in a fruition of suffering? Therefore it says: "forbearance is not forbearance", etc.
