"Lake Anavatapta": in this Jambudvīpa, going north from the centre, there are nine Black Mountains, next there is the Great Snow Mountain (Himālaya), and next there is Mount Gandhamādana; north of the Snow Mountain and south of Gandhamādana is Lake Anavatapta. Here it translates as 'free from fever and distress.' It is fifty yojanas in length and breadth, filled with waters of the eight qualities. From within it, a great river emerges on each of the four sides: to the east is named the Gaṅgā River, which circles the lake once and flows into the eastern sea; to the south is the Sindhu River; to the west is the Vakṣu; to the north is the Sītā; all circle the lake once and enter respectively the southern, western, and northern seas. The 'Héng River' in the present sūtra is precisely the Gaṅgā; saying 'Héng' is an error of the translators.
