"In the dharma [signified], from its first arising, etc.": taking hold of the aggregates in the womb is called "birth"; those whose form and body are not yet completed may already die. "Just born" means dying immediately upon birth. "Temporarily abiding": five years, ten years, or up to a hundred years are all generally called "temporarily abiding." As seen by the first heaven, fifty years in the human world is merely like a single day and night; how much more so to the noble wisdom! Thus the Saddharmasmṛtyupasthāna-sūtra says: "Some die in the womb; some have their lives end as soon as they are born; some perish as soon as they can walk; some die suddenly as soon as they can run. Although they differ in longevity, all return to the place of death." Hence the Vimalakīrtinirdeśa says: "This body is false and deceptive; though provisionally sustained with bathing, clothing, and food, it must inevitably return to destruction."
