"If one abides," and so forth, clarifies by contrast. Questioning and explaining: The sūtra's intended meaning is that if a bodhisattva creates merit and gives rise to greedy attachment, it becomes contaminated; the cause being contaminated, the fruit is also contaminated, and attaining the thirty-two marks merely makes one identical to a cakravartin, not named a Buddha. This would mean that both cause and fruit are lost, forming the doubt raised. Now, since one creates merit without giving rise to greedy attachment, the cause becomes uncontaminated; since the cause is uncontaminated, the fruit is likewise so, and the thirty-two marks attained adorn the dharmakāya, being named a Buddha. How could one doubt that its cause and fruit are lost?
