與大比丘眾者，聞法之侶也。比丘者，梵語也，華言乞士，上乞法以資慧命，下乞食以資色身。
'Together with a great assembly of bhikṣus' are the companions who heard the Dharma. 'Bhikṣu' is Sanskrit, translated into Chinese as 'alms-seeker': above, seeking the Dharma to sustain the life of wisdom; below, seeking food to sustain the physical body.
