善現初聞此義，至是復問者，何耶？問辭雖同，其意則別，蓋所問不過住大乘、降妄心而已。初之問意但問能住、能降之法；此之問意，若謂我能住、我能降，存此分別障於真證無住之道，故又興此問也。

Subhūti had initially heard this meaning, so why does he ask again now? Although the words of the question are the same, their intent is different; for what was asked is nothing other than abiding in the Mahāyāna and subduing the deluded mind. The initial intent of the question asked merely about the method of that which can abide and that which can subdue; this question's intent is: if one says 'I can abide' or 'I can subdue,' harbouring this discrimination obstructs the path of truly realizing non-abiding; hence he raises this question again.
