"Why is this?" is an expression introducing inquiry. From the previous statement: "In reality there is no dharma attained in the fruit of bodhi, and therefore he received the prediction from Dīpaṃkara," one might doubt: since there is no fruit of Buddhahood, how could there be Buddha Dharmas? It explains: "'Tathāgata' means the suchness of all dharmas." "Suchness" is tathatā: not false is called true (zhen); not differentiated is called such (ru). This substance of tathatā penetrates the three times and extends through the ten directions; it is neither empty nor existent, neither changing nor shifting, and is named the Tathāgata-nature. If there were anything attained, it would not be the Buddha's bodhi.
