1.233

眾生有聖、有凡，而凡夫眾生於此般若不能生信，聖體眾生乃能信解。言彼非眾生者，非凡夫眾生也；非不眾生者，非不是聖體眾生也。聖體眾生即大乘根器人也，豈可視為凡夫眾生不能生信？尚恐善現未悟，下文又徵釋之。

Sentient beings include both the noble and the ordinary; ordinary sentient beings are incapable of generating faith in this prajñā, whereas sentient beings of noble substance are able to have faith and understanding. Stating that they are not sentient beings means that they are not ordinary sentient beings; stating that they are not non-sentient beings means that they are not without noble substance. Sentient beings of noble substance are people of Mahāyāna capacity; how could they be regarded as ordinary sentient beings who are unable to generate faith? Fearing still that Subhūti had not yet awakened, he further examines and explains it in the text below.
