1.256

三十二相者，應身相也。觀如來者，觀法身如來也。問意謂：可於應身相好中觀見法身不？善現乃知應身相好從法身流出，若見相好即見法身，故答云：「如是，如是。」

The thirty-two marks are the marks of the nirmāṇakāya. Contemplating the Tathāgata means contemplating the dharmakāya Tathāgata. The intention of the question was: can one contemplate and see the dharmakāya within the primary and secondary marks of the nirmāṇakāya or not? Subhūti then knew that the primary and secondary marks of the nirmāṇakāya flow forth from the dharmakāya; if one sees the primary and secondary marks, one sees the dharmakāya; hence he answered, "So it is, so it is."
