For giving has three kinds: giving of material support, giving of fearlessness, and giving of the Dharma. Giving of material support means giving wealth and goods to sustain the lives of others. Giving of fearlessness means observing the precepts so as not to harm those without enmity, and practicing patience so as not to retaliate against those with enmity. Giving of Dharma means tirelessly explaining the Dharma with vigor, explaining the Dharma with meditative concentration without missing the faculties [of listeners], and explaining the Dharma with wisdom without inversion. However, all giving does not go beyond the six sense-objects; what are called the six sense-objects are things such as couches, bedding, food and drink, and medicines. When worldly people practice giving, their minds hope for karmic reward, which is attachment to marks; when bodhisattvas practice giving, they thoroughly comprehend that the three wheels are fundamentally empty, and therefore they can avoid abiding in marks.
