Second, the passage on the foremost: "nirvāṇa without remainder" means being without the remainder of conceptual differentiation; it is the inherently pure nirvāṇa. If explained in terms of the One Vehicle, it is the constant nirvāṇa of the three periods of time, and also constant enlightenment across the three periods of time; if explained in terms of the Three Vehicles, it is that through wisdom in one period of time one attains the constant nirvāṇa of the three periods of time, and that the responsive and transformation bodies have remainder while the dharmakāya is without remainder. Furthermore, when the reward body remains while defilements are extinguished, that is with remainder; when afflictions are severed and the reward body is extinguished, that is without remainder. If explained in terms of the Hīnayāna, it is exclusively formulated as: the reward body having ceased is without remainder, and defilements having been extinguished first is with remainder. Within this single meaning, regarding the severing of afflictions by mental associates of wisdom, the various schools differ; corresponding to conceptual differentiation, without extinguishing mental views, there are these distinctions. What follows may be measured by this. The central doctrine of this sūtra exclusively sets aside the Hīnayāna, and its meaning is restricted to the purport of the Mahāyāna and the One Vehicle.
