Subhūti said to the Buddha, "World-Honored One, will there perhaps be any sentient beings in the future, in the final age, who upon hearing such sūtra passages and verses will give rise to [the notion of] the true mark?" The Buddha told Subhūti, "Do not speak thus: 'Will there perhaps be any sentient beings in the future, in the final age, who upon hearing such sūtra passages and verses will give rise to [the notion of] the true mark?'" The Buddha further told Subhūti, "There will be, in the future, in the final age, bodhisattva-mahāsattvas, at the time when the Dharma is about to be extinguished, who maintain the precepts, cultivate meritorious virtue, and possess wisdom, who will be able to give rise to faith in these sūtra passages and verses and take them to be real." The Buddha further told Subhūti, "You should know that those bodhisattva-mahāsattvas will not have practiced and made offerings before one Buddha, two Buddhas, three, four, or five Buddhas, nor will they have planted wholesome roots before one Buddha, two Buddhas, three, four, or five Buddhas." The Buddha further told Subhūti, "They will have already practiced and made offerings before immeasurable hundreds of thousands of myriad Buddhas, and planted wholesome roots before immeasurable hundreds of thousands of myriad Buddhas, so that upon hearing this sūtra, even for a single thought-moment they will be able to give rise to pure faith. Subhūti, the Tathāgata fully knows these sentient beings; the Tathāgata fully sees these sentient beings."
