The Buddha said: "Subhūti! What do you think? As many sands as there are in the Ganges, would the sands in that number of Ganges rivers be many?" Subhūti said: "Very many, World-Honoured One! The Ganges rivers alone would be countless, how much more their sands?" The Buddha said: "Subhūti! I now tell you truly! If a good man or good woman were to fill with the seven jewels as many worlds as the sands of that many Ganges rivers, and use them to make offerings to the Buddhas, Tathāgatas—Subhūti! What do you think? Would that good man or good woman obtain much merit?" Subhūti said: "Very much, World-Honoured One! That good man or good woman would obtain very much merit." The Buddha told Subhūti: "If [one] were to fill with the seven jewels as many worlds as the sands of that many Ganges rivers and bestow them in giving; yet if a good man or good woman with regard to this dharma gate even receives and upholds a four-line verse, etc., and explains it to others, this merit surpasses the previous merit by immeasurable asaṃkhyeyas."
