At that time, Subhūti, hearing this sūtra spoken, deeply understood its meaning and purport, wept tears of sorrow, and wiping his tears addressed the Buddha, saying: "Rare, Bhagavat! Rare, Sugata! The Buddha preaches such a profound dharma gate; never before, from when I first attained the wisdom-eye, have I been able to hear such a dharma gate!" "Why is that? Subhūti! What the Buddha preaches as prajñāpāramitā is precisely not prajñāpāramitā." "World-Honoured One! If there is again a person who, hearing this sūtra, has pure faith and thus generates the true mark, one should know that this person achieves foremost, rare merit. World-Honoured One! This true mark is precisely non-mark; therefore the Tathāgata preaches it as named 'true mark, true mark'. World-Honoured One! For me now to hear such a dharma gate, have faith, understand, receive, and uphold it is not difficult. If in a future age there are sentient beings who hear this dharma gate, have faith, understand, receive, and uphold it, these people will be foremost and rare. Why is that? This person has no notion of a self, notion of a person, notion of a sentient being, or notion of a life-span. Why is that? The notion of a self is precisely non-mark; the notion of a person, notion of a sentient being, and notion of a life-span are precisely non-marks. Why is that? Being free from all marks is named the Buddhas." The Buddha told Subhūti: "So it is, so it is. If there is again a person who, hearing this sūtra, is not alarmed, not terrified, and not afraid, you should know that this person is extremely rare. Why is that? Subhūti! What the Tathāgata preaches as the foremost pāramitā is not the foremost pāramitā. As for the Tathāgata preaching the foremost pāramitā, those immeasurable Buddhas also preach the pāramitā; this is named the foremost pāramitā."
