Question: The characters for 'human' (人) and 'benevolent' (仁) are different; why are they considered equivalent? Answer: The Great Scripture states: 'Because they possess benevolent grace, they are called humans.' The Laozi states: 'The sage is not benevolent; he treats the common people as straw dogs.' Thus we know that a human king practices benevolence without seeking repayment for his kindness. If he is a lord who turns his back on the Way, he is merely a human and not benevolent; if he is a lord who accords with the Way, he is both a human and benevolent.
