Question: How do the gist and the substance differ?
Answer: The gist is like the headrope [of a net] or the collar [of a robe]; the substance is like the meshes or the fur. Shake the collar and the fur rises; pull the headrope and the meshes open—such is the meaning of the gist and the substance. Again, it is like hairpins and bracelets: gold and silver are the substance, and the craftsman fashioning them is the gist. Here, the principle of dharmatā is the substance, and cultivating the cause to attain the fruit is the gist, and so forth.
