Question: If all are arhats, this was already distinguished earlier; why clarify it again now? Answer: Because the bodily manifestations of bodhisattvas have no fixed standard—sometimes resembling ordinary persons, sometimes resembling the two vehicles. If they were not separately clarified, it is feared there would be confusion with the actual [śrāvakas]. It is hoped that those who value the Hīnayāna will know that the virtues of the great personages equal those of the arhats, and that those who grasp at names and characteristics will awaken and know that the bodhisattva's path surpasses ordinary beings; therefore they are spoken of separately again.
