「天定功德定味」者，三歎德。天定者，謂報生天上得此定。功德定者，謂修德生天而有此定。味者，一字為句，即是味著禪定也。有人云：功德定味為句。非也。「常樂神通」者，色界天中皆有修報二種神通也。言常樂，簡非報德神通也。

"Heavenly absorption, merit absorption, and the savoring of absorption": the third is praising their virtues. Heavenly absorption means attaining this absorption by retributive rebirth in the heavens. Merit absorption means having this absorption through cultivating virtues and being born in the heavens. "Savoring" is a one-character clause, which refers to being attached to the savor of dhyāna-absorption. Some say that "merit absorption savoring" is a single clause, which is incorrect. "Constant delight in supernormal knowledges": within the heavens of the form realm, all possess both cultivated and retributive supernormal knowledges. Stating "constant delight" selects and excludes the retributive supernormal knowledges.
