4.36

「教化眾生」下，四明利他。上句明化他之行，教化眾生令常覺悟必不退轉；下句結歎初心也。《大經》云「發心畢竟二不別，如是二心前心難。」《般若》云「能生一念淨信，於無量佛而種善根。」《法華》云「於無量劫行五波羅蜜，不如聞佛壽命生信」等，皆斯義也。

From "teaching and transforming sentient beings" downward, the fourth clarifies benefiting others. The upper line clarifies the practice of transforming others, teaching and transforming sentient beings to keep them constantly awakened so that they definitely do not regress; the lower line concludes by praising the initial mind. The Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra says: "The initial aspiration and the ultimate [awakening] are not two or different; between these two minds, the prior mind is the difficult one." The Prajñā Sūtra says: "To be able to generate a single thought of pure faith plants wholesome roots with immeasurable buddhas." The Lotus Sūtra says: "Practicing the five pāramitās for immeasurable kalpas is not as good as giving rise to faith upon hearing of the Buddha's lifespan"; these are all this meaning.
