As for "the three realms are empty", this sums up that the three realms above are all empty. As for "the store of fundamental ignorance of the three realms is also empty", this clarifies that the substance of the birth and death of transformation is empty, having two parts: first clarifying that the cause is empty, next clarifying that the effect is empty. The store of fundamental ignorance is the emptiness of the cause. Ignorance is like the great earth, able to generate afflictions, hence called "fundamental". Regarding its karma, it is the karma that generates outflows; regarding its retributive effect, it is the transformed three realms. From "three bhūmis and nine utpāda-nirodhas" onwards, next it clarifies that the effect is empty. Regarding "three bhūmis and nine utpāda-nirodhas", there are two interpretations: first, the eighth, ninth, and tenth bhūmis each have three minds, combining to nine utpāda-nirodhas. The second interpretation is that within the transformed three realms there are each three kinds of mind-made bodies, called three bhūmis and nine utpāda-nirodhas. From the first bhūmi to the fifth bhūmi is called the mind-made body traversing the bliss of samādhi; the sixth and seventh bhūmis are called the mind-made body that realizes the self-nature of dharmas; from the eighth bhūmi and above is called the mind-made body of innate uncreated action with all kinds. The Tripiṭaka Master said: first is the bhūmi of seeing in the first bhūmi; second is the bhūmi of cultivation from the second bhūmi onwards; third is the ultimate bhūmi in the tenth bhūmi. Within these three bhūmis there are each initial arising, subsequent abiding, and final fulfillment, making nine utpāda-nirodhas. As for "the retribution of the remaining traces of ignorance within the previous three realms is empty", above it clarified the active afflictions of the five entrenchments; here it speaks of the latencies of ignorance.
