Seventh, listing the assembly of the Brahmā [heavens], which has four [parts]: first, generally indicating the number; second, separately listing the names and numbers; third, praising their virtues; fourth, concluding summary. First, because ten thousand is multiplied by ten thousand, it says 'ten thousand times ten thousand koṭis'. From 'three Purity' onward, second, separately listing the numbers. The 'three Purity' are the three heavens of the Third Dhyāna: Minor Purity, Immeasurable Purity, and Universal Purity. The 'three Radiance' are the three heavens of the Second Dhyāna: Minor Radiance, Immeasurable Radiance, and Radiant Sound. The 'three Brahmā' are the three heavens of the First Dhyāna: 1. Brahmā's Assembly, 2. Brahmā's Retinue, 3. Great Brahmā. The 'five Joyous and Blissful heavens': the Fourth Dhyāna has nine heavens: 1. Fruit-Bearing Heaven, 2. Minor Fruit Heaven, 3. Vast Fruit, 4. Markless; these four heavens are not discussed, but only the latter five are listed. The 'five Joyous and Blissful' are the five Pure Abodes; because these beings rejoice in debating doctrinal meanings, they are called 'Joyous and Blissful': 1. Effortless, 2. Heatless, 3. Good Manifestation, 4. Well Visible, 5. Ultimate Form. From 'celestial absorption merits' onward, third, praising their virtues. 'Celestial absorption' is retribution absorption, which is retribution dhyāna and retribution five skandhas. 'Merit absorption' is pure absorption, which is pure dhyāna and wholesome defiled five skandhas. 'Taste' is taste-absorption, being attached to dhyāna absorption. 'Constant bliss and superknowledges' are the two kinds: superknowledges obtained by cultivation and superknowledges obtained by retribution. 'With the merits of the eighteen birthplaces all completely perfected' summarily concludes the eighteen heavens of the four dhyānas above.
