初段中護十地者，牒所修十地位也。言云何行可行者，問何等行法可依之修行，成十地得自行。第二問云何行化眾生者，問菩薩行化用何等法化眾生。第三問言以何相眾生可化者，問所化眾生之體相。

In the first section, "protect the ten bhūmis" takes up the stages of the ten bhūmis that are cultivated. As for "what practice can be practiced": this asks by relying on what kind of practice and Dharma one may cultivate, accomplishing the ten bhūmis and attaining one's own practice. The second question, "with what practice do they transform sentient beings": this asks with what Dharma bodhisattvas practice conversion to transform sentient beings. The third question, "with what characteristics are sentient beings transformable": this asks about the substance and characteristics of the sentient beings to be transformed.
