The previous chapter relied on emptiness to protect the buddha-fruit, which is the wisdom of expedient means and actual wisdom; this chapter relies on the five patiences and ten bhūmis to transform sentient beings, which is actual wisdom and expedient means; hence it is called "Chapter on Conversion and Instruction". The previous chapter was not without causes, but was for accomplishing the fruit; this chapter is not without the fruit, but is for accomplishing the causes. Moreover, it raises illusory pedagogical traces to transform illusory sentient beings; hence it is called "Chapter on Conversion and Instruction". Within this chapter there are two sections: first, questions; second, answers. In the initial questions there are three: first, asking about the characteristics of practice for one's own benefit across the ten bhūmis; second, asking about the characteristics of practice and conversion for the benefit of others; third, asking about the characteristics of the virtues and practices of the sentient beings to be transformed.
