“In the midst of the assembly, he then addressed the nine hundred and ninety-nine kings, saying: ‘The time to meet death has arrived. Every person should chant the lines of verse from the Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra of the Benevolent Kings' Questions of the Past Seven Buddhas.’ At that time, King Kalmāṣapāda asked the kings, saying: ‘What Dharma are you all chanting?’ At that time, King Samantaprabhā then replied to the king with the above verses. When the king heard this Dharma, he attained the emptiness samādhi; having also heard the Dharma, the nine hundred and ninety-nine kings all realized the samādhis of the three gates to emptiness. At that time, King Kalmāṣapāda rejoiced exceedingly and addressed the kings, saying: ‘I was misled by a heretical master of an outer path; it was not you gentlemen's fault. You may return to your home countries, and each invite Dharma masters to expound the names, phrases, and syllables of the prajñāpāramitā.’ At that time, King Kalmāṣapāda entrusted the kingdom to his younger brother, left home to practice the Path, and realized the anutpattika-dharma-kṣānti. As is spoken of in the Daśabhūmika of the Ten Kings, five thousand kings constantly chanted this sūtra and obtained retribution in this present life.”
