This chapter explains the thirteen Dharma masters. To understand and enact it is "receiving"; to maintain it long without losing it is "upholding." It is titled accordingly, and hence called the "Chapter on Receiving and Upholding." The six chapters of the main discourse form four [divisions]; this is now the fourth, explaining the virtuous conduct and characteristics of those who propagate the sūtra and exhorting future [generations] to rely upon them in studying the sūtra. In the text there are two [parts]: First, Candraprabha's doubt and inquiry; second, from "The Great Muni said..." onwards, the answer. In the initial inquiry there are two [parts]: First, Candraprabha conceives a doubt arising from the preceding chapter; second, from "He addressed the Buddha, saying..." onwards, he directly inquires about the persons who uphold the Dharma in the final era. In the preceding doubtful inquiry, first he perceives portents and entertains doubts in his mind; next he speaks to request instruction.
