From “Good sons!” onwards is the second major division within the patience of practice, which further explains the external ordinary persons [practicing] the ten virtues prior to the thirty minds, adducing failures to reveal attainments. In the text there are six sentences: first, the exposition of the doctrine, clarifying that external ordinary bodhisattvas practicing the ten virtues still have progress and retrogression; from “just as” onwards is the second, presenting the simile of the light feather: in the wholesome destinies, the seeing of principle is not yet clear, and they repeatedly retrogress from the Great Vehicle to abide in the Small Vehicle, resembling that light feather that shifts with the wind and cannot remain upright; from “All these bodhisattvas” onwards is the third, matching the simile; from “although [they practice] for ten thousand kalpas” onwards is the fourth, clarifying that if one practices the ten correct paths for ten thousand kalpas with a mind of apprehension, one still cannot advance in stage; from “generating the minds of bodhi” onwards is the fifth, clarifying that by generating the mind of non-apprehension, one is able to enter the stage of the patience of practice; from “they also constantly study” onwards is the sixth, concluding that these are indefinite persons who cannot be designated by name.
